QEC’s Standby Power Rate Application
Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) has submitted an application requesting the approval
to create a new standby power rate. The application has been submitted to the Minister responsible for QEC and will be reviewed with input from the territory's Utility Rates Review Council (URRC).
The proposed rate is solely charged to commercial customers who opt to generate
their own electricity but rely on QEC to be on standby for backup power when their
self-generation system is not operating.
QEC must continue to maintain its plant and distribution systems at a level that meets
the community’s peak power demands, including those of customers on standby. The
proposed rate is intended to recover the full cost of providing this service, ensuring that other customers are not required to subsidize it.
“Our priority is ensuring a reliable and secure electricity supply for Nunavut,” said Ernest Douglas, President and CEO of QEC. “Establishing this new standby rate allows QEC to provide services to customers who wish to be isolated from the QEC grid and generate 100% of their electricity needs by self generation.”
This new rate will not impact regular electricity customers and/or their monthly bills.
The URRC will evaluate the proposal and is seeking public feedback. QEC encourages interested parties to participate by submitting their comments to URRC@gov.nu.ca by 5:00 p.m. on September 8, 2025.
The Standby Rate application is available on QEC’s website www.qec.nu.ca, under the
“Customer Care” drop down menu, in the section “Customer Rates”.
