IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 6, 2016) – Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is pleased to announce that Mavis Ell of Coral Harbour has been selected as this year’s recipient of QEC’s Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier Scholarship. QEC awarded Mavis Ell with the scholarship for her exceptional academic achievements and selfless contribution to her community.
A nursing student at Nunavut Arctic College and fluent in Inuktitut and English, Mavis’ goal is to break the language barrier that Inuit patients face when accessing health care services in Nunavut. “When I graduate, my plan is to return to Coral Harbour as a nurse and care for the people of my community,” said Mavis. “... it is heartwarming to know I have full support from my home community which gives me motivation.” Mavis plans to graduate in 2018.
“I am humbled by Mavis’ dedication to her community. Her dream of becoming a medical professional in order to have a positive impact on the ground, should serve as an inspiration to us all. I’m very proud that QEC is able to support Mavis in pursuing her ambition,” said the Honourable Johnny Mike, Minister responsible for QEC.
Each year, a promising student enrolled in a post-secondary education program receives the Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier Scholarship for their commendable achievements.The $5000 scholarship is awarded in memory of former government leader, Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier, who played a vital role in establishing a locally managed electrical utility for Nunavut before passing away suddenly in 2002.
